Expediency is about the life that Alex experienced while he was constantly granting himself pleasure and nothing else. The novel itself is divided into three parts, which I chose to divide and name them into 4 parts: Expediency, Suffering, Retribution, and Atonement. The thesis itself is divided into two major parts - the first part, introduction, and theory behind pleasure and pain and the second part is the analysis of picked segments from the novel where pleasure or pain are expressed.
Alex does all these things just because he experiences pleasure while doing it and what later follows is his surreal venture down to hell. The protagonist of the novel, Alex, is a 15-year-old psychopath who commits various heinous crimes like rape, breaking and entering, car theft, vandalism, and eventually, murder. The analysis is based on the theoretical framework of hedonism and mainly focuses on the works of Epicurus and Epicureanism. The aim of this thesis paper is to analyze the pleasure and pain in Anthony Burgess’s novel A Clockwork Orange.
